America’s smallest working barn offers a July 4th reviv’ul mtg with Thai food and fireworks
Sunday, June 25, 2017 -- (Long Beach, CA) -- As Independence Day arrives, a highlight in southern California is fireworks set by the Queen Mary, now marking it's 50th year in Long Beach.
And what's the tiniest way to celebrate?
Go to a barn-dance inside a stunning Thai restaurant to join a small crowd expected for the first-ever "reviv'ul mtg" of a political party that technically doesn't exist.
Hundreds of thousands have been invited on social media. Maybe a dozen souls will show up.
"Gathering people together is how we save America," said Billy Orton, an obscure novelist and former press secretary to a batch of California state lawmakers.
A barn dance in a restaurant? There will be an actual barn. With cows and a pig.
But no one could ever draw out milk or dance inside the barn, since the tinker-toy-style barn is barely large enough to hold an antique record player that will play either Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs or Bob Dylan for a "Soul Train Hand-Bump Thank-You" dance to start the "political reviv'ul mtg."
The Thai District restaurant, which is all-organic, is now in its second year, and located at 140 Lindon Avenue (at Broadway), in downtown Long Beach. After the 6 to 8 pm meeting, guests will walk two blocks for an ideal spot on Ocean Boulevard to watch the 9 pm fireworks.
Orton exited the Democratic party earlier this year and now is the sole member of Party of Grace. The Thai food barn-dance is what he hopes will be the organization's first public event, and hopefully lead to 1,000 more by Halloween 2020.
Is a tiny barn with salt-and-pepper-shaker cows and a toy pig worth a trip to Long Beach, even if a direct flight carries you to a city now with roughly half-a-million residents?
Maybe if you're going to do more than a hand-bump dance alongside a two-foot-cube of America's "smallest working barn."
