BILL ORTON PICKS UP ROSSMOOR ENDORSEMENTS IN RACE FOR 67TH      Assembly candidate William R. "Bill" Orton (D-Seal Beach) picked up the support of two prominent Rossmoor residents, with endorsements from Sewer District Boardmember Jack Rosenthal and local bookstore owner James Boyd, who is the father of a Seal Beach Councilmember.
Sewer board member Rosenthal endorsed Orton after hearing the Assembly candidate's stand on storm drain runoff.
Rosenthal, who first met Orton 10 years ago, becomes the seventh elected official to endorse Orton, who is also backed by State Attorney General Bill Lockyer and Assemblymember Lou Correa (D-Garden Grove).
"Hard as it may be to believe," said Orton, "people are getting worked up about my stand on sewers and storm runoff and wastewater treatment."
Orton publicly announced his support for a proposal made by SB Councilman Shawn Boyd, son of the bookstore owner, for the local Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) to divert and treat millions of gallons of runoff that would otherwise flow directly from city streets into the San Gabriel River and down to the ocean with no cleanup.
In a letter to Councilman Boyd and other members of the OCSD, Orton called for the state to put up $100 million to be matched with funds from regional agencies. Those funds would then be made available to cities to help pay for repairs, upgrades and replacements of sewers, storm drains, and wastewater treatment facilities.
James Boyd's endorsement has more to do with books than sewers.
"Sure" was the response from bookstore owner when Orton asked for his endorsement. Boyd, owner of the store on Main Street that bears the family name, describes himself as solid Republican but noted that Orton "has been good to the store," as a regular customer and as a supporter of his son.
"I'm really proud to have Jack Rosenthal and Jim Boyd with me," said Orton. "These two gentlemen are right there at the heart of things in Rossmoor."
Orton points out that Jim Boyd is not the only father of a councilman to give an endorsement. Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly's father, Bill, is also publicly backing Orton.
The 67th Assembly district covers west Anaheim, Cypress, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Stanton, Sunset Beach and Westminster.
Orton faces Republican Tom Harman in the November election.
