ORANGE COUNTY ELECTIONS OFFICIALS TO REFUND $2,800 TO END SAMPLE BALLOT TRIBULATION

(SANTA ANA) -- Elections officials in Orange County will end two weeks of sample ballot tribulation by refunding $2,800 to state Assembly candidate WILLIAM R. "BILL" ORTON (D-Seal Beach), who will use the money to pay for ads in local papers to publish his campaign statement.

"My goal with the sample ballot was to have as many voters read about me," said Orton, whose 250-word statement was mistakenly printed in the Republican version of the election mailer, but not in the Democratic book.

Elections officials at first promised to send Orton's message in a supplemental mailing to the 71,000 Democrats of the 67th district, but reversed course due to a glitch in state elections law.

OC Registrar of Voters Rosalyn Lever on Thursday confirmed that a refund check for Orton's money is being processed.

Orton, who is unopposed in the March primary, says he still wants to get his statement out to voters, but will now rely on local press and the internet.

"This isn't the way I intended things to happen," said Orton, "but everything is working out well. Republican voters were able to read my statement, people know that I am running, and I've received some news coverage. Now I will be able to buy some ads in the local papers."

The 67th State Assembly District covers West Anaheim, and portions of Stanton, Garden Grove and Westminster, and all of the cities of Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Cypress, and La Palma.

Anyone wishing to read Orton's ballot statement will find it by visiting .

Anyone wishing for more information may visit or write to Bill Orton, at either or to 85 Riversea Road, Seal Beach, CA 90740.
