Orton bears honey, cherries, pastry on jaunts to Stanton      (STANTON) -- Assembly candidate William R. "Bill" Orton (D-Seal Beach) carried his race -- and armloads of foodstuffs -- to Stanton, the tenth city in his coastal Orange County legislative district.
"The Stanton recognition dinner, Victorian tea and pancake breakfast are some of the greatest events I have ever taken part in," said Orton, who has now actively campaigned in all ten of the cities in his district.
Orton joined city leaders and state Senator Joe Dunn (D-Santa Ana) to honor 15 community heroes at the annual Community Recognition Dinner, held at the city's civic center Friday evening.
On Saturday, carrying an armload of pink boxes each bearing a different Danish pastry, Orton was the only man to join more than a hundred members of the Stanton Chamber of Commerce Women's Division at the group's annual Victorian tea.
"What a wonderful three hours," said Orton, who spent a good deal of the afternoon carving and serving pastry. "Offering pastry sure helped open up some conversations, but nothing could beat being the only man in a crowd of so many charming women."
Orton also brought five pounds of just-in-season cherries and a gallon jug of sage honey to the Stanton Lions annual pancake breakfast, held Sunday morning at the Boys and Girls Club. The gifts -- purchased at a local farmers market -- were well received, said Orton, particularly as the Lions had run out of honey, an essential ingredient in their pancake batter, just moments before the Assembly candidate showed up unexpectedly bearing the gifts.
"If you're going to a big event," said Orton, "it's nice to bring something."
Orton is the Democratic nominee in November's election for the 67th State Assembly District, which includes four precincts of Stanton, as well as west Anaheim, portions of Garden Grove and Westminster, and all of Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Cypress and La Palma.
