On Human Cloning and tampering with the food chainDear Editor
President Bush is correct to condemn news that scientists in Massachusetts have successfully cloned human embryos. The company, Advanced Cell Technology, said their purpose is to create the embryos so that they can later extract "stem cells" for research.
The President and lawmakers of both parties agree that it is wrong for scientists to play God by cloning our own species. A federal ban on human cloning should be widened to prevent experiments of this sort from taking place. A state ban should be passed to ensure that no taxpayer dollars are being spent to fund cloning research or ventures.
Scientists should recognize that things like human cloning and genetic modification of the food chain are not what regular people want.
If I pull off my own electoral miracle in my race for state Assembly, I will author legislation banning state investment in research on human cloning, and carry a second bill requiring labeling and safety testing for any foods containing genetically modified organisms.
Taxpayer money should not be used to pay for trickling viscous fluids oozing into Dr. Frankenstein's test tubes. Humans should not play God by cloning our own species or genetically altering the food chain upon which all life depends.
BILL ORTON is the Democratic candidate for State Assembly in the 67th District, which covers Cypress, Huntington Beach, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, and portions of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster.
